

The purpose of this primer was to identify opportunities, as well as potential pitfalls, of conducting qualitative research with Facebook users and their activity on Facebook and provide potential options to address each of these issues. Furthermore, best practice guidelines to assist researchers interested in conducting qualitative studies using data derived from Facebook are lacking. However, conducting a content analysis of text from Facebook users requires adaptation of research methods used for more traditional sources of qualitative data.

As much of Facebook users' activity consists of creating (and commenting on) written posts, the potential use of text data for research is enormous. Shifts in public perception of captive cetacean display strongly suggest policy makers should reconsider the legislative and regulatory status quo.Īs Facebook continues to grow its number of active users, the potential to harness data generated by Facebook users also grows. In March 2016 SeaWorld announced it would end its orca breeding program company-wide and in January 2018 the Vancouver Aquarium announced it would no longer display cetaceans. In November 2015, a similar bill was introduced (and reintroduced in March 2017) in the US House of Representatives. We also identified character references, series content descriptions, and real-life events as themes within media sources.
